2018 Review

2018 Review

Hello 2019! I can’t believe the past year just flew by. Looking back, I’ve done quite a bit in 2018. I continued to be a huge consumer of media — books, mangas, games, films, and musical performances. I travelled a bit more and got into the world of credit card points. I moved to a new city and flat close to my work. These are just the tip of the iceberg of my long year. I summarised my happenings using the same format from last year, so I hope you’ll enjoy my 2018 review!

Media Memo

New Books/Mangas: 16
Books/Mangas Re-reads: 135
Total: 151

Like last year, I did a lot of re-reads and read sixteen new books and mangas. My top three favourite new reads for this year are:

* The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
* Escape from Sobibor by Richard Rashke
* Running with Lions by Julian Winters

Here is my full GoodReads summary.

New Fanfics: 27 fics / 1,761,000 words
Fanfics Re-reads: 55 fics / 4,889,000 words
Total: 82 fics / 6,650,000 words

I re-read a lot of fanfics this year because I craved its familiarity. Long fics are just a good way for me to escape from reality!

Games Played: 10
Games Beaten: 5

I re-played a couple of games this year, but I tried to focus on some new games. The top three new games I enjoyed were:

* Gyakuten Saiban 6 (42 hours of gameplay)
* Bravely Default (70 hours of gameplay)
* Stardew Valley (110 hours of gameplay)

These games really took over my life, especially Stardew Valley! I really enjoyed playing it on my PS Vita.

Anime/TV Series Watched: 7 / 40 episodes
Films Watched: 20 (10 new)

I watched way more animes, tv shows, and films this year. A good chunk of what I watched were documentaries. Of the new stuff I watched, Darkest Hour and The Breakfast Club were the films I enjoyed the most. For series, I really enjoyed this Auschwitz documentary. Here’s my film diary on Letterboxd.

Beauty Buys

I’ve not tried a lot of new skincare products this year, but I did try some new ones and these are the ones I ended up liking a lot!

* Estée Lauder – Advanced Night Repair Eye
* Hada Labo – Shirojyun products
* Lush – Tea Tree Water
* Mentholatum – Melty Cream Lip Balm Matcha
* Shiseido – Le Mondor Shampoo & Conditioner

My preferences have shifted to mostly Japanese products. Hado Labo, especially, has become my favourite brand of 2018. But the real winner for me was that matcha-flavoured lip balm!

  1. I love how you consume a lot of various types of media, because I do, too, but I often see a lot of criticism for it! I love the diversity, but a lot of people I come across tend to stick to just one or two of them instead of venturing out into other forms (e.g. books in place of movies or TV).

I’m gonna have to try Lush’s tea tree water a try :D I’ve acne-prone skin, more so lately (ugh), and the ingredients are surprisingly safe for me. XD

    I hope your 2019 goes well! :)

  2. Wow, you did so much reading! That’s great that you were able to spend a lot of time on your hobbies, especially all those hours of gameplay! Winter Olympics took over my life in February too, haha. It felt like it was so long ago, but it was only last year. Man, 2018 felt long!

It looks like you had an eventful year with fun trips and your move in September. I hope 2019 will be a great year for you! Happy New Year!

I’m loving how you recapped 2018! Looks like you’ve had an eventful year, and despite all the hassle that happened looks like you had a blast with your travels and everything else.

Can’t wait to see you in March ;)

  4. This is a neat way to summarize a year, I like the list format. You’ve done a lot in 2018, lots of travelling and the move and the driver’s license. Even if you don’t like driving it’s still a good thing to have :) And wow, I’m so impressed you’ve read so many books and fanfics! :O
    Happy belated New Year!

  5. Yay for consuming various media and enjoying rereads! I love the familiarity of rereading things, so I’m right there with you.

Also congrats on the driving test! And you did a lot of traveling in 2018 which I think is awesome. I’m so glad you could go and enjoy a bunch of different places ❤️

Here’s to an even better 2019!

  6. Holy cow. You did a LOT of reading this past year, as well as completely changed so much! I’m glad you had a good 2018, as for me, unfortunately, I let it be a year of feeling sorry for myself/letting my anxiety and depression get the better of me. Not for 2019!

Great job on the driving test as well! I can’t imagine how difficult driving laws can be elsewhere, however here in the US you’d think most drivers got their licence from a cereal box -.-

I also LOVE the way you formatted your year-end list. It’s so neat and concise while still sharing your many accomplishments. I’m definitely not that organized…yet, lol. One of my goals for this year is to de-clutter, and begin living rather minimalist so that once I DO decide to move I won’t have to do it then!

Awesome year in review, and I hope your 2019 is going to be even better than 2018 for you!

  7. Wow, you’ve read a lot of fanfics! That makes me want to read fanfics too, I realized that it’s been a long time since I’ve read something that’s not related to school or work!

Congrats on the new credit card! I am looking to explore more of my credit card rewards system too, since I’ve had my card for so long but never really bothered to take advantage of the points and benefits.

Btw, I really like how you organized your life events! It’s so easy to read and yet I still have a sense of how eventful your year was! Lol I still remember reading about how the Winter Olympics took over your life, haha! I can’t believe that was just last year :o

  9. Holy Moly! you managed to get so much done this year. Man, I’m put to shame. I thought that accomplishing my 26 Little Things was a big deal, lol.

All jokes aside, I think it’s awesome that you managed to squeeze so much from 2018. How did you even manage to read so much? It’s so impressive.

I hope that this year brings you more fun and I look forward to seeing you escapades in London!
