2017 Review

2017 Review

With 2017 ending, it’s time to look back on it! Last year I summarised my year with three different posts. This year, I’ve condensed everything into this single post. I’ve summarised my media consumptions, beauty product usages, and life happenings. I tried to keep this post short and simple. ^^ With that said, I wish you all the best in 2018!

Media Memo

Books & Mangas

New Books/Mangas: 15
Books/Mangas Re-reads: 90
Total: 105

For books and mangas, I did a lot of re-reads and read fifteen new books and mangas. My top three favourites reads for this year are:

* The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women by Kate Moore
* One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus
* How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Here is my GoodReads summary. I also want to mention that I finally finished reading all of the The Baby-Sitters Club books this year. It only took me 20+ years . . .

Kindle Voyage

New Fanfics: 62 fics / 1,712,000 words
Fanfics Re-reads: 62 fics / 3,604,000 words
Total: 124 fics / 5,316,000 words

I read and re-read a lot of fanfics this year. My Kindle Voyage, which I bought in the spring, had seen a lot of mileage! A good chunk of fanfics I read were from Yuri!!! On Ice, but I also read fics from Harry Potter, The Hobbits/The Lord of the Rings, and The Baby-Sitters Club.

Video Games

Games Played: 9
Games Beaten: 7

I actually told myself to play more games this year, and I did! I played mostly on my PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS. My top games for this year are:

* Gyakuten Kenji 2
* Hakuouki: Kyoto Winds
* Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call

I’ve played over 60 hours on TFFCC alone. . . what can I say? That game is addicting, especially when it’s Final Fantasy music + rhythm game + RPG = HOMG-I-can’t-stop-playing!

Animes & Films

Anime Series Watched: 2 / 25 episodes
Films Watched: 15

I watched a fair amount of animes and films this year. Granted most of them were re-watches, but I did watch Dunkirk . . . yes, I only saw one new film in theatre this year. Maybe 2018 will be the year I finally watch my backlog of DVDs and Blu-rays. Anyway, here’s my film diary on Letterboxd.

Beauty Buys

Beauty

I’ve tried a decent amount of new beauty products, and these are the ones I consider the best for 2017. Last year, I’d gone crazy over Lush. This year, L’Occitane stole my heart. I really adore the shampoo and hand lotion. Hada Labo is another brand I’ve grown to love. Also, Sulwhasoo’s sleeping mask (or sleeping pack) was a great discovery, thanks to Jenny!

Shampoo: L’Occitane’s Aromachologie Body & Strength Shampoo
Conditioner: L’Occitane’s Citrus Verbena Fresh Conditioner
Soap: O My! Goat Milk’s Oatmeal, Milk, & Honey
Oil Cleanser: Hada Labo’s Gokujyun Cleansing Oil
Exfoliator: Skinfood’s Black Sugar Strawberry Mask Wash Off
Moisturiser: Hada Labo’s Gokujyun Clear Lotion
Sleeping Mask: Sulwhasoo’s Overnight Vitalizing Mask EX
Hand Lotion: L’Occitane’s Verbena Cooling Hand Cream Gel
Body Lotion: Lush’s Dream Cream
Lip Balm: Dr. Bronner’s Lemon Lime Lip Balm

Comments

  1. Wow it sounds like you had a great 2017 with quite a bit of traveling! I also got back into fan fiction after the release of Digimon Tri. and it’s exciting to see that there’s still a very activity community around this old fandom! 😅 So glad that you love the Sulwhasoo mask, and boy was I relieved to find out it’s not being discontinued. Happy New Year and best wishes for 2018! 🎊🎊

  2. You’ve done a lot of reading this year! I wonder what the word count would be if you include people’s blogs XD. I think it’s pretty cool that you do re-reads. It’s always better late than never to finish a book :).

It’s great that you’ve played more games this year! Leisure activities are the best way to get your mind away from work XD. I haven’t used L’Occitane products yet but keep on seeing them in the mall! The Sulwhasoo sleeping mask is really nice! Glad the recommendation worked out well. Thanks for sending me one too!!! It really lasts a long time!!

Sounds like you had a really eventful year. You’ve done a lot of neat traveling! Great that you had some new experiences throughout the year. August is just a month for tech XD. Hope you’ll have an amazing 2018, Tara!

  3. Why did you turn down the Japan job?

  4. I love how you’ve set out this post. I love hearing about what people have read and watched. I don’t know why, I just find it really interesting!

I’ve just started reading One of Us is Lying, so I’m glad to hear you liked it. I’m only three chapters in, but it seems great so far, and I’m really not sure what’s going to happen!

I’ve just got back into gaming recently. I used to keep myself too busy to have time for gaming, but now I’m taking a more relaxed approach on evenings and I’m really enjoying it. I have such a huge backlog of games though, that it’ll take ages to finish them all!

It sounds like you did a lot this year. I’ve loved reading about all your different trips – it’s so cool that you’ve visited so many different places. Hope that 2018 goes really well for you!

  5. Wow, well done on reading so much in 2017! I’m trying to up my reading game this year and hopefully give myself some insights and fun from them. I did OK in 2017 with loads of self-help books but it started to trickle away when I went back into studies.

I have a friend from Taiwan who loves L’Occitane SO MUCH. I remember going to her flat when she was studying in Sheffield and seeing all her L’Occitane products! Seems like a great brand 😊

Seems like you had a pretty eventful 2017! I’m glad you got to meet bloggers and connect in real life – fingers crossed to meeting you someday soon!!

    Happy New Year!

  6. Happy New Year Tara!

I was counting numbers on your reading / watching achievements and was impressed. I’m terrible at reading but I did spend a lot of time this year watching reruns and movies.

I see a lot of traveling in your log, which is awesome because you always have such great travel posts! I also see you’ve interviewed twice for overseas positions? Are you looking to get a job outside of Korea? What ever it is that you want, I wish you the best of luck for it in 2018, and to get a job that you really want. :)

That’s so cool you met a number of online friends this year! I met 3 back in 2015 – early 2016, but afterwards my life changed. Nobody seems to visit San Francisco, sigh. Just kidding! :P I’ll give you a heads up if I make it to Korea sometime!

  7. It looks like you’ve had an eventful year of travel and meeting up with people! I’m glad you were able to many things you wanted to, like seeing Hanyu Yuzuru and visiting your best friend. I’m jealous of the number of times you went to Japan!

That’s also great that you were able to spend a lot of time on reading and playing games. That is a lot of books and fics that you read! I also know what you mean about addicting games. I spent sooo many hours in Breath of the Wild, and now I play Destiny 2 for hours at a time. Such time sinks!

Happy new year! I hope 2018 will be a good year for you too!

  8. That’s an amazing count of travelling you did! Hoping that 2018 brings you lots more opportunities :D Happy new year!

  9. You’ve done so much this year! I know that part of this year was tough with the move to your new home and having to convince your mom to give you the bigger room but you’ve managed to do so many awesome things!

Your trips to Japan looked like so much fun and I really appreciate the postcard you sent me. It meant so much for you to think of Josh and I at that time. I’m really sorry that I’ve been so quiet but I look forward to seeing more of what you are up to this new year =)

  10. Whoa. You read so many books/mangas and fanfics, nice work! :D It’s cool that you finished The Baby-Sitters Club series. Better late than never! :D

You played a lot of games! :D I want to get back into gaming, but I am currently undecided on what console to get. Some games also give me motion sickness, so I never know until I play them. :(

It’s great that you found a lot of great beauty products. It’s nice to try different products and see what works for you. :D

It has been a busy year. I hope 2018 will be a positive one and I look forward to reading about it on your blog. <3

  11. You’ve had such a productive year.

I have a MacBook Air as well. Bought it about 2 years ago, and it’s definitely an awesome computer. Love the lightweightness. :)

  12. Sounds like it’s been a great year for you. Looking forward to hearing more of your stories this year :)

  13. Holy smokes, that’s a lot of books! I see that you have a Kindle Voyage—how are you liking it so far? I have the latest Kindle Paperwhite, but I’ve been curious about its successor!

And whoa, you traveled and met a lot of people last year! I remember when Shayne met you two years ago(?), and I’d been jealous that you got to hang out with her (although we, too, finally met in August last year!).

Anyway, happy new year, Tara! May this year be your best year yet! Cheers, my friend!🥂

  14. Your life log was really interesting, it’s exciting to see how your year progressed, and the moments that stuck out for you in each month. I loved your media round-ups too! I’m very interested in The Radium Girls, and I’ve added it to my read list. Your goodreads round-up was huge! Congratulations on reading so many books!

Your skincare products look amazing! I’d be very interested in trying the Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Mask – I think I’ll treat myself next payday.

You achieved and experienced so much in 2017 – Happy New Year, and all the best for 2018 to come! x

  15. Congrats on all your accomplishments for the year! I haven’t actually read any of your top 3 favorites so I’ll have to look into those. It’s also really cool you read a lot of fanfics. Where do you read most of them? I admit, I haven’t read many except for maybe one X-Men fanfic? Which I remember being really good.

It’s amazing to see how much you’ve done when it’s all in one place. I hope 2018 is even better than your 2017 :D

  16. You’re so brave!! You applied to jobs in other countries like Japan, I would love to be able to branch out like that!!! Your year sounded so packed! I saw you have Chobits, it has been so long since I read that manga!! Used to be one of my favorites. I also got a new mac this year – my poor mac book of 6 years finally died. It lasted for awhile though!

Happy New Year! I can’t wait to follow your adventures in 2018!!

  17. You did a lot of traveling this year! You also have a lot of movies. XD “Ouran”/”Host Club” was on Netflix for a while, and it was in my list, but then my list somehow got all erased and I forgot to re-add it. I don’t think it’s there anymore, though (ugh).

    I hope you have a lovely 2018! <3

  18. Oh wow, Tara! You’ve done so much reading this year! I’m jealous! I set my Goodreads goal for 100 books but I embarrassingly only read 3 books for the past year… whoops.

Sounds like you had such a good 2017! And I love that you wrote that you saw Dunkirk :) It’s one of my favorite movies of the year! I actually got a copy of the movie for Christmas.

And that’s so awesome you met up with some bloggers but in cool locations! It’s so much fun connecting with bloggers in real life.

I hope you have a good year ahead of you, Tara! Looking forward to reading all about it!

  19. I wish I got to finish The Babysitters Club series too! 2017 sounds like a jampacked year for you, I hope your 2018 is so much better. :)
