Beloved Beauty Buys 2016

Beloved Beauty Buys Header

Back in October 2015, I had begun my skincare and haircare journey. That was when I became serious about taking care of my skin and my hair. In 14 months, I have tried out a grand total of 63 products, but not all of them were my favourites. This post is a compilation of the products that have worked the best for me. I’ve chosen one for each category (oil cleanser, moisturiser, soap, and et cetera), so read on to see what products have made this list. Quick shout out to Nancy for helping me come up with a title for this post!

Oil Cleanser

Banila CO Clean It Zero oil cleanser — It took me a while to try this product, and I do admit to being sceptical of its hype, but it really does live up to it! This oil cleanser leaves my skin silky soft, and its scent is quite lovely without being so overpowering like the Nature Republic one I’ve tried. While I cannot judge on its make-up removing capability, for someone who only wears sunblock, this cleans my face nicely.

Water-based Cleanser

NEOGEN Green Tea Real Fresh Foam Cleanser — After the oil cleanser, I follow it up with a water-based cleanser, and this one from Neogen is amazing. I love its soothing and relaxing texture and scent, and the foam isn’t harsh on my skin at all. If anything, I can’t use any other water-based cleanser because I love this one so much!

Exfoliator

Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off — Of the few exfoliators I’ve tried, this proves to be the most compatible for my face. This really leaves my skin feeling super soft. My skin feels so refreshed whenever I use this scrub. When I’m in a rush, I use a chemical exfoliator, but when I want something to pamper myself with, this is my go-to product.

Toner

Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner — As much as I love the Son & Park Beauty Water, I feel that this toner works the best for me. This one leaves my skin softer, and I like that it has BHA to help keep my pimples in check. I use the Beauty Water in the evening to give my skin extra cleansing, but in the morning, I use this toner. Oh, I also like the fact that this one has no crazy scents, so that’s a plus!

Essence

Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence — Although I am currently using this Missha essence, when I am done with this bottle, I am returning to the Benton one. The Snail Bee High Content Essence works better for me, and it leaves my skin feeling a lot softer. I think my face likes snail and bee goos, haha!

Serum/Ampoule

Missha’s Time Revolution Night Repair Science Activator Borabit Ampoule

Missha Time Revolution Night Repair Science Activator Borabit Ampoule — This is the category I don’t really use much, but of the two I’ve tried, I like this one a lot. I only use this at night because I find that if I layer on too many things, my face feels super icky. Using this at night also ensures my skin receives the full benefits of the ampoule while I sleep.

Eye Cream

Benton's Fermentation Eye Cream

Benton Fermentation Eye Cream — Not only do I like this eye cream because of its tube application, but this cream fascinates me. It comes out super thick, but when I start applying it, it glides on my skin smoothly. Right now I use this in the morning with the Enchanted Eye Cream from Lush in the evening, but when I finish up the latter, I will stick to the Benton eye cream.

Day-time Moisturiser

Benton's Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel and Missha Near Skin's Repairing Snail Cream

Benton Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel and Missha Near Skin Repairing Snail Cream — I put two for the day-time moisturiser because I use them based on the season. The Benton one is perfect for the warmer months; the Missha one is better for the colder months. If my face wasn’t so oily, I’d use the Missha cream all-year long because it leaves my face smooth. However, the Benton one works for me when it’s hot, and it’s good that it has no scent.

Night-time Moisturiser

Missha's Super Aqua Ultra Nutritious Cream

Missha Super Aqua Ultra Nutritious Cream — I’ve only recently discovered this cream, but compared to this one by Nature Republic, this cream works really well for me. This is a richer cream, so I apply it at night. This one does have a scent, but I find it to be really pleasing. Another thing about this cream? A little goes a long way!

Sleeping Pack

TonyMoly’s Panda’s Dream White Sleeping Pack

TonyMoly Panda’s Dream White Sleeping Pack — Seriously, of all the products on this list, this is probably my ultimate favourite. I love this sleeping pack! It absorbs quickly into my skin, and it has a wonderful soothing scent that doesn’t leave me gagging (unlike some unmentionable products). This focuses on brightening and evening out my skin tone, but I also find it to be really hydrating. Plus, the panda packaging is soooo cute! I give kudos to Shayne for influencing me to trying this.

Sunscreen

Missha's All Around Safe Block Aqua Sun Gel

Missha All Around Safe Block Aqua Sun Gel — For the longest time, I’d been using the pink bottle, the essence one, but I didn’t like how that left my face looking oily! Then a friend said this one didn’t leave her face oily, so I gave this a shot, and she was right! This doesn’t leave my face looking so greasy, so this sunblock goes on my awesome list!

Facial Powder

Innisfree's No-sebum Mineral Powder

Innisfree No-sebum Mineral Powder — Because of the greasy sunblock, I’ve been using this facial powder to make my skin matte. I may not be using this as much now that I’ve found the other sunblock, but I think I’ll still use this in the summer to help my face be less oilier. This powder has a minty scent to it, and a little goes a long way for a full coverage.

Soap

Lush Sandstone — This soap is a godsend. It’s so lemony and refreshing, and it’s great for when I need to exfoliate because this soap has real sand in them! I don’t recommend this to those who have super sensitive skin, but for those like me who don’t mind a good scrub here and there, this soap is worth the investment. Plus, unlike sugar or salt scrubs, this doesn’t leave your shower or bathtub slippery, as I’ve discovered was a major con with the oil-based scrubs.

Shampoo

Lush's Jersey Bounce Shampoo

Lush Jersey Bounce — I never thought I’d be using a shampoo with salt, but this really works well with my hair. I alternate this with my sulphate-free shampoo, but when I need to give my hair and scalp a good scrub once a week, this is the shampoo I use. This has a great lemony scent, and I love how the salt also helps exfoliate my scalp. It’s a bit pricey for a shampoo, I feel, but it’s lasting me a while since I use this weekly.

Hair Conditioner

Lush's Veganese Conditioner

Lush Veganese — I wanted to try a silicone-free conditioner, and this is the one I adore. I use this when I use Jersey Bounce, and the two complement each other well, and using both gives my hair extra volume. I bought the small bottle of this, and it’s been lasting me quite a while.

Body Lotion

Lush's Sleepy Lotion

Lush Sleepy Lotion — Honestly, I am not a body lotion type of girl, but after discovering this lotion, I think I’ve changed my mind. I swear, this lotion’s magical. It’s super moisturising and the smell relaxes me a lot. Unfortunately, this is only available around the holidays, so I better stock up on this! It’d be great if this was available all-year long.

Deodorant

Nature Republic's Fresh Deodorant Stick (Floral)

Nature Republic Fresh Deodorant Stick in Floral — Last, but not least, I have found an aluminium-free deodorant that works for me! I’ve tried the baking soda and cornstarch concoction a couple of years ago, but this deo works a lot better than the home-made ones. It’s also nice that this has a nice, floral scent. Sorry, Lady Speed Stick, but I’m not returning to you!

What’d you think of this list? Have you tried any of these products? What are some of the best ones you’ve tried this year? Share with me in the comments!

  1. The panda sleeping pack is seriously the cutest! I want to buy it just because of how cute it is! Or maybe that is their marketing ploy… either way it’s working. XD

I will have to remember the sunscreen because I hate how oily and gross most sunscreens leave your skin feeling. I feel like I need to shower right after I put it on! It’s not a big deal if I’m at the beach or something, but when I’m just going for a day out with friends and know I’ll be in the sun I will tend to forgo it just because I don’t want my skin to feel gross.

I’ve always wanted to try Lush soaps – they smell so good! That’s also an added plus that it doesn’t make the shower slippery, which I didn’t even know there were soaps out there that wouldn’t make it slippery!

It’s always a bummer when they only offer certain scents or products around the holidays. My favorite Bath & Body works scent they only offer around Christmas so I always have to stock up for the rest of the year! I usually overstock haha, so that’s where they get me! I bought enough soaps and lotions last year that I didn’t have to buy any this year because I still have so much left!

  2. WOW! Your list is amazing. Your routine is definitely more refined and has grown to suit you personally.

I still have the Banila Clean It Zero and the Missha Time Revolution Night serum left from my Korea trip. They do go a long way, but I’ve also been bad and skipping them in my routines since I’ve been lazy. I’m sure my skin is paying for it.

    I have the Skinfood Strawberry sugar scrub since it was supposed to be for acne skin. I haven’t been using it but I remember liking how my face felt when I do remember to use it. ^^;;

I don’t know what’s the best one since I still haven’t finished my stash. Maybe next year???

  3. I wish the snail bee essence worked on me, but it didn’t…or I’m just not patient enough? I’ve had it for a while now, but I haven’t used it in months. Maybe I’ll trying using it again to see how it works on my skin!

  4. Eep, I love your skincare posts! I’ve been telling myself I want to try the Korean skincare routine, but I don’t even know here to start! I’ve done a little research and there so many steps, lol.

Bit skeptical of a oil cleanser for myself only because my skin gets so oily already. The water-based cleanser sounds good, though! Funnily enough I actually this exact one on yesstyle.com and was considering getting it!

Toners over here have way more harsher chemicals that Korean products, I think. I read it somewhere anyway. The toners of used in the past have always left my skin dry and flakey. I stick to micellar water, now. Oooooh, I also really wanted to get the TonyMoly sleeping pack too because I’ve heard really good things about it. I love pandas 😆

Wow, this is actually a really insightful list. Granted most of the stuff I’d have to get online if I wanted to try but the Lush products I get in-store, so will definitely be checking those out! Thank you so much for this list!

  5. The Lush shampoo with the salt sounds pretty good. If it weren’t for my coloured hair then maybe I would more more willing to give it a try! It might be too harsh for coloured hair. But you did feature a few Lush products and a couple of stores have been popping up here so I might have a look. I can’t stand the smell of their stores though, you can smell them from outside and it’s really strong. It makes Nick’s allergies go crazy 😞

I’m guessing the conditioner is vegan? I’m all for vegan products 🙃

My mum recently bought TonyMoly foot masks. I am keen to give them a try to get the dead skin off my feet! She also bought a few other TonyMoly masks.

I tend to use the same products rather than trying new ones. If something works I am usually bound to stick with it. Sticking with certain brands can be good for loyalty points, if the company has a loyalty program!

  6. So I believe everyone has said this…but I concur, the Panda Sleeping Pack is adorable. I’ve yet to purchase anything from Lush, and I’m glad to hear that you are being proactive in taking care of your skin and hair – definitely something that I’m not. :/ Anyhow, I look forward to reading more of your beauty posts.

  7. Wow, this was really actually helpful. I mean, I love my beauty products, always get them from Sephora, but I’m on the look out for new toner, although I can make it myself. This was really awesome! You used so many products! Thanks for taking the time to review all these. Definitely looking forward to doing more research into that toner.

  8. the clean it zero is soooo hyped! i might try it someday even though a cleansing balm in jar form is not something i like. for moisturizers, i don’t mind them in jar form but for cleanser, i prefer pump. it’s also annoying to scoop up products from the jar and i heard that with jar packaging, if they stay exposed in the air, they can lose their benefits. not sure if that’s true but it makes sense.

i think i’ve said this before but the neogen cleanser really intrigues me! i really wanna try it someday :D

i never actually paid attention to whether i prefer chemical or physical exfoliator better. i did use both. i’m currently using a physical one from the body shop though. i haven’t used many chemical exfoliants before so i can’t judge. i’ve heard quite a few good things about the skin food black sugar mask too.

the tonymoly panda sleeping pack is absolutely the cutest! i normally don’t use sleeping pack because i have combo skin and i hate leaving overnight mask. i’d wake up the next skin as a greasy hotdog! but maybe, i’ll try it for the sake of that panda pack haha

glad you mentioned the innisfree powder. i’ve been eyeing that product for a while now because i don’t have translucent loose powder (i have a compact, pressed one) and i might try that too.
you’re also lucky enough to find aluminium-free deodorant! i can’t seem to get that here which sucks so i can’t help but to use one with aluminium in it and it’s by Dove. i only use it whenever i’m going to go out though, so as to avoid too much aluminium exposure to my skin :

seeing people’s different skincare products make me really happy for some reason! it’s so fun to see what other people are into :D

  9. Ooo, I love the title of this post! :P Has a nice ring to it xD

Thank you for sharing your product favourites! I’m always on the look out for good products but regardless if I buy them or not, I never stick to the routine so I think it has no effect on me due to the lack of consistency. This will be a goal in 2017 I hope to improve on xD

I’ve tried Lush products before and I really did enjoy them, they smelt divine and did make my hair and skin feel smoother!

  10. Chansoriya on

I love the Benton stuff, ever since your mail! I’m so happy you showed me a whole new world. I’m still working with other products to figure out my skin for the colder months, but I’ve been doing it happily now that I have a better understanding of skincare. I think I want to try the eye cream, I’ve been reluctant because I didn’t know where to start. If it’s a familiar name like benton I’m willing to try it first. I’m so reluctant with Lush just because it’s very personal, I made the horrible choice of letting some girl talk me into trying one of her products. It stung so bad… maybe I will give it a try later.

  11. I love how serious you’ve become with the skincare stash! 63 products are pretty impressive and it’s good to try out new things. Not all products will work their magic on you- so it’s a fair game :).

Oooh I love it when skincare products leave your face balanced (not too oily/dry). The black sugar mask looks pretty cool. I know I love a sandy texture so this sounds like the answer to my woes without it having those little beads XD. It’s interesting to see that the Snail Bee contains bee venom. Pretty neat to see it being a helping hand than a harmful one :).

Tube applications are the best! It’s easy to squeeze out any remaining cream without going too crazy. Seeing how you’re using snail products, I should get over that fear and give it a try too XD. The Panda package looks adorable!!! I saw it once on Amazon and thought it was a lip balm XD.

I just realized- I hope the sand from the Lush sandstone isn’t heavy because I heard that sand likes to clog pipes D:. (Very guilty of loving sandy products). Ahhhh, I still need to try out the Nature Republic deodorant stick! I finally found the shop in my local mall. Gotta go in some day XD.

I haven’t tried any of these products yet. Though, Clinique’s Acne Solutions worked many wonders on me this year!

  12. Ah, I love talking about beauty! Since I started to get serious about skincare in October (2016) I’m obsessed. I’ve dropped so much money on skincare and completely my skin routine and I have no regrets because I’m seeing results! It’s so worth it.

I use the Banila Co. Clean It Zero Purity cleanser because my skin is a little more sensitive and I was nervous about trying anything not made for sensitive skin. I pair it with the Neogen Green Tea Cleanser, too! I love them both.

Right now I’m using a free sample of the Son & Park Beauty Water before using my toner (Klairs), and then I go about the rest of my routine. I use a COSRX Snail Essence and I love it! I also use the Benton moisturizer and finish it with MISSHA’s Mild Essence Sun Milk!

I just recently ordered SKINFOOD’s Brown Rice Cleansing Tissues which I’m excited about because I love my oil-based cleanser, but I like to have a makeup-free canvas for it to work on instead of using it to get my makeup off. I also ordered an exfoliant (GOODAL’s Deep Clean Pore Glacial Clay) and COSRX’s Blackhead Power Liquid because I’ve heard nothing but good things.

I’m mostly excited about the exfoliant and COSRX product because just with the other steps my usually oily skin has drastically improved and my pores are much smaller! They used to be so gross and my skin was oily 30 minutes after washing my face.

Since I switched to Korean products I pretty much haven’t gone back. I love the masks, the products, and the variety of things to try. I know I’ll try other products when some of my current products are up (like a new toner) because there are just so many options out there! I keep trying to convert people to Korean skincare now, ha. But I’m seeing serious results and that’s enough for me!

  13. Thanks for sharing the list of all the products that you like. You have certainly tried a large number of them, so it’s good to know what you think works well! :D

  14. I’ve never tried any of these products, but there’s a few that I’ll have to buy now! I’m really bad at knowing what to buy when it comes to skincare, so this list is definitely helpful to me.

That panda packaging is so cute! I’d buy it just for the packaging, can’t believe it’s a good product as well!

I’ve only ever tried bubble baths from Lush, and never really looked at their other products, but the Ines you’ve listed sound great. Not sure I xoukd pay their prices for shampoo though!

    Great list!

  15. That’s a long list! The panda sleeping pack is cute too. I heard of good reviews about the Missha sunscreen too. Glad that it suits your skin too!

  16. Wow what an amazing list!!! Just now I added the Innisfree powder to my list and will be picking up a few when I go to Hong Kong. I’ve been going without powder the last few days and noticed my skin gets really oily. :( I also want to try the Panda sleeping pack which I can get locally here, just that I never knew what that is! I think Nature Republic so far has become one of my go-to brands mainly because there are already two stores here! I’m also looking for an exfoliator and just found out there is a Skin Food here! :O Thank you for writing this!

  17. Love this list!! It’s always fun discovering new product and learning what works for others. I’m dying to try the Neogen cleanser, it’s got everything I love: self-foaming, green tea, and
actual tea leaves! I’ve tried the Missha ampoule before and I remember liking its texture, but I can’t remember if it made a difference to my skin. I do want to try more Missha products though, they have some great stuff!

  18. So I’m late but I really wanted to read this post so I’m currently typing this on my phone lol.

I actually haven’t used the majority of the products on this list! I like using Korean products but I usually have to resort to ordering stuff online and shipping usually takes a long time, haha. But I also use the Sleepy lotion from Lush!! It feels and smells amazing.

I think the only kind of product I don’t use is the eye cream. Would you recommend incorporating it into a skincare routine?
