Timeless Thoughts: MP3 Rotation Sites

Timeless Thoughts

And it is December — I can’t believe 2016 will end soon! Are you guys all ready for the holidays and to bid farewell to 2016? I think I am ready for this year to end, haha! But before I greet 2017, I’m here to do the last Timeless Thoughts post for the year. Georgie and I co-host this monthly link-up, and I am hosting again for this month. If you would like to participate, you’re more than welcome to join our link-up by submitting your entry with the link-up widget located at the end of this entry! This link-up is opened for two weeks, and your entry can be about anything you find unforgettable from your past or present! It can be an object, an event, a person — anything goes — and you can have more than one thing you miss. For this month, here’s what I’ve been missing lately!

In April 2005, I made a new website called Capriccio. Back then MP3 rotation sites were popular, and with my music background and a love for instrumentals, oldies, and jazz, I started my own rotation site. On this site, I would share five to seven songs in MP3 format I was currently digging or wanted to share with my visitors on a bi-monthly to monthly basis. Some months I did special rotations, where I would share more than five songs — like a special holiday rotation. But for the most part, I shared five songs, and they ranged from classical to oldies to Kpop to Jpop to jazz to soundtracks . . . in other word, it was an eclectic mix. I worked on this site until September 2010, and I ultimately closed the site in January 2012.

I find myself missing those days when MP3 rotation sites were popular. I met and made a couple of great friends, one of whom I still keep in regular contact. The site allowed me to share my love of music with other people, but I was also introduced to so many great songs I would have never considered listening on my own. Although I closed the site in 2012, I missed sharing music with others, and that’s why I made the decision to start up Symphonic Selections. It’s not the same as what I did on Capriccio, but I like that it’s more low-key, and I can focus on one song (and a couple of its variation).

Do you remember MP3 rotation sites? Did you frequent them? What kind of songs would you share if you had run one? Share with me in the comments!

This concludes my post. Below are the rules, banner, and the widget for you to submit your entry; you will have two weeks to submit! I look forward to seeing all your posts, and I hope to see you all again next month at Georgie’s blog!

  1. I will definitely do this. I have a few things in mind that I miss. I never been on mp3 rotation websites but I would definitely want to see what they’re about, especially since my knowledge in music is not that great. Take care of you <3

  2. I know what you mean, this year has gone so fast!

That is so cool that you used to have that kind of website. I never visited them during that time, because I had really slow internet. I really like that you have the concept alive though the segment on your blog. :D

  3. I remember your site, Capriccio! I used to love MP3 rotation sites. I have so many Anime and J-pop songs downloaded thanks to them. I ran one as well for Initial D songs, since it was a part of my Initial D domain. I would run a poll each time to decide which 4 or 5 songs to feature on the next rotation. I miss those days too!

  4. I remember using them to get soundtracks and songs by artists featured in the anime that I watched. I remember having a lot of music from Inuyasha, Naruto, and Bleach. XD

Ahh! 2016 has definitely gone by too quickly! And I swear I’m going to send your Christmas card early this year, otherwise it’ll be 2017 before I know it…

  5. I remember seeing MP3 rotation sites when I first started blogging. It’s pretty cool to see how people are sharing their fave songs left and right XD. It made me think about how sharing music changed to the point where we just share youtube/soundcloud/etc links instead. Good to see that you’re keeping your love of sharing music going through Symphonic Selections :).

If I had an MP3 rotation site today, I’d probably share my ghetto music XD.

  6. I never took part in mp3 rotation sites. I think I used the internet at a time they were no longer popular. I sort of feel that playlists were a revived version of the mp3 rotations, and 8tracks was a way to share and stumble upon playlists others had created. 8tracks has changed now and I think you have to pay? But I remember the days when you had mix tapes (my other TT post!) and you would share songs with your friends. That’s what this reminds me of. :)

These days I just share playlists or even just write out the songs I am currently into. Not as flash – but I still like telling people what I am listening to. (Like your Symphonic Selections.)
