Symphonic Selections: Final Fantasy VII ~ Ahead on Our Way

Symphonic Selections

I’m here with a new Symphonic Selections post. I almost went for another sad song this month, but I opted to choose a song that would help me relax. Several days ago, I found myself humming a song from Final Fantasy VII. It just popped in my head, and it’d been stuck ever since. I’m just glad it’s a song I enjoy and don’t mind hearing it over and over again. I can definitely listen to this and relax after a long day of work and such. Huzzah for relaxing video game tunes :D

This is the original version composed by Uemtasu Nobuo, and in the game, it was first played in a village called “Kalm”. The name of the town fits the mood of the song a lot. Just listening to this tune brings a soft smile on my face, and it just makes me want to slow down and take a deep breath. I could never live in a sleepy town all my life, but I wouldn’t mind a getaway to give my weary soul a break.

Here’s the piano version of the song. While the original version makes me sway on my feet as I imagine myself sitting on park bench, this one makes me think of going to a quiet upscale bar; there I’d be sipping on a cocktail while I listen to some pianist performing this song. Listening to this on the piano would wash away all my accumulated stress. This version comes off classier, while the original feels more free-spirited — in the end, I love both. Thank you, Uematsu-san, for composing this!

What do you think of this song? Do you like the original or the classical version better? What’s your favourite track from Final Fantasy VII? Let me know in the comments!

  1. It is rather a calming song. And the piano one sounds like a bar song! XD

  2. I love the piano version. I didn’t even know this game still exists! lol.

  3. Oh, Final Fantasy! My cousin, brother and I basically lived in our family room for an entire summer finishing up VII and getting through most of VIII. We had no lives haha!

I still like the original because it’s got this nostalgic, sentimental feel to it. The classical version is really nice. I can imagine it being played somewhere like a reception hall.

    • Aw, that sounds like a lot of fun, playing a long game like that together :D

The original one does sound nostalgic. It’s definitely giving me a lot of sentimental feels!

  4. Ah! I remember this song! I agree that it has a really relaxing feel to it :) I think it’s interesting how the other version has a slightly different feel. I can totally see the quiet upscale bar feel after you mentioned it. Final Fantasy songs are so nice!

    • FF songs are definitely awesome. I never get tired of listening to them. And that’s one thing I love about music — change it slightly, and it can be an entirely different piece :D
