Symphonic Selections: The Untouchables

Symphonic Selections

Last month, when I was rekindling my love for gangster films, I watched The Untouchables, and one of the things that really made me love the film was Ennio Morricone’s beautiful soundtrack. I’ve always enjoyed his music. His film soundtracks like Once Upon a Time in America and The Mission are absolutely gorgeous. When I found out he composed for The Untouchables, I was curious to see what the soundtrack would be like. I was quite surprised to see I enjoyed it a lot to where I decided to feature its main theme for this month’s Symphonic Selections.

This is the magnificent main theme. In the film, this was first performed when the four Untouchables came together and went on their first liquor raid. This theme, which sounds so grandiose, pretty much played whenever the Untouchables were successful with their missions. It has a very noble feel to it, and it’s just fitting for them since they tirelessly worked together to bring down Al Capone. This song’s just amazing. I couldn’t stop listening to it for weeks. Every time I hear this piece, it puts a huge smile on my face, and it also has the tendencies to make tears come to my eyes because of its beautiful, triumphant melody. Do give this musical masterpiece a listen if you can! Tell me what you think and also let me know if you’re a fan of Morricone’s music :D

  1. Having never heard of Ennio Morricone (and not being a fan of gangster movies) but always being open to new music… I pressed play and closed my eyes.

I am in love. Ths is soaringly beautiful, there are goosebumps racing up my spine and I can feel myself smiling. (I’m still typing with my eyes closed – gotta love being a touch typist!)

I will definitely be checking out more of Morricone’s music. Thank you! :)

    • I’m so glad you love the theme! Your description about goosebumps is very fitting :D This is the kind of things I love to hear when people listen to instrumentals!

  2. Wow, seriously loving the Untouchables theme. I love the way it builds up :) I must definitely give this film a watch.

I’ve never heard of Ennio Morricone, but I’ll pretty much listen to anything if it sounds good. The theme is, as you say, a “musical masterpiece”!

    • Ennio Morricone composed a lot of great music! I highly recommend listening to his works :D

  3. I’m in work right now so I can’t listen, but I’m really interested to hear what this sounds like! It’s not a film I’ve heard of, but I have heard of Ennio Morricone, so I’m sure it’ll be amazing!

    • I hope you like this when you did get the chance to listen to it! And yay for someone knowing who he is!

  4. It’s not really my kind of thing but I can see why you and people would like it. I like how it builds up

  5. Amazing score! I loovee orchestra sounds. There is power to music don’t you think? I’m not really into gangster films though but I can imagine the scene that this plays in.

    • Orchestras are amazing. Music is definitely a powerful thing :) Honestly, this song doesn’t fit the whole gangster thing, but it fits the guys who are trying to catch Al Capone by giving them this heroic sounding song!

  6. I agree that it sounds very grandiose! I haven’t seen the film, but I can totally see this being played after something successful. I especially like how dramatic it sounds near the end :)

    • Woot! So glad you like this song! I highly recommend the film if you ever get a chance to watch them :)

  7. This is great – I love it! I’ve not seen any gangster films, but I think Andy will try get me to watch one of his favourites some point soon. The nearest thing I’ve seen to a gangster film is Kung Fu Hustle, but that’s barely there haha!

Definitely going to listen to more of these soundtracks!

    • Yay! Do listen to more soundtracks! I love film and video game OSTs a lot :D Then again, I’m a sucker for instrumentals, haha!
