Apple Allergy

This post is old, so what you see here may not reflect my current opinion and mindset, certain information may be outdated, and links may be broken.

I know the Internet’s not the best place to get accurate information, but after reading on multiple sites, I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m allergic to apples or whatever’s on the apple.

See, I’ve noticed several years back that whenever I eat something, my inner ears itches really badly. I couldn’t figure out what was causing it until last year when I pinpointed my guess on apples. This year, every time I ate raw apples, the tell-tale itchiness attacked me, so I am positive that it has something to do with raw apples. Only thing was, I couldn’t figure out why they were itchy. I just thought maybe it was just a weird thing about me that nobody else suffered from.

Until I Googled it half and hour ago, and I read that the insane itchiness in my ears is some form of an allergic reaction to the apples. I think I better get some allergy testing done. Until then, I am staying away from raw apples.

Hilariously enough, I don’t even like raw apples, except in salads, but I guess I better avoid those now.

On the other hand, I’ll be very pissed if I ever develop an allergy to oranges and other citrus-y fruits.

Oh, and don’t get me started on how upset I’ll be if I can’t eat chocolate for the rest of my life.

    It could be the outside of the apple. Maybe try peeling the apple (you can use a vegetable peeler) and try eating an organic apple to see if the same thing happens. Just for curiosities sake, since it seems you don’t mind going without :)

    • I was going to buy an organic apple until I saw it was $2 an apple.

      . . . And it came in a pack of three. I’m not paying $6 to see if I’m allergic to the pesticides or not! XD;;;

    Rub the apple skin and apple on your skin! That’s honestly odd that it itches your inner ear, lol. See what the result is. Perhaps there’s something else going on :P

    • It’s some kind of oral allergy thing, so I doubt rubbing it on my skin will yield anything. I can touch apples without problems. It’s consuming the thing that’s the problem.

  3. Hmmm…I don’t think I have ever met anyone who was allergic to apples before. That really sucks. I have a friend who’s allergic to strawberries, but she eats them anyways. ^^;;

    On the topic of fruit allergy, your story kinda reminds me of an episode of Raising Hope where the guy realizes that his mom had been lying about his fruit allergy, and so he starts eating all the fruits there is. But at the end of the episode, he finds out he’s allergic to guava or something like that since he started swelling up.

    • O_O; Weird show!

      But yeah. I don’t think apple allergies are common. It only happens when I eat them raw, though. As long as they are cooked or whatever, I can eat it. So yay for apple pies! :D

  4. Is it just when they’re raw? Like if they’re baked into a pie or something you don’t have the reaction? Allergies can be so interesting. I hope I never develop an allergy to chocolate, I’d suffer through a lot for chocolate XD

    • Yeah, raw apples does it to me. I don’t really like raw apples, so the loss isn’t as upsetting as it might be like chocolate XD;

  5. Allergies suck. I’m sometimes allergic to crabs. I’ll itch like crazy after eating it. >.< But being allergic to something common like apples must be a pain. :S

    • It can be a pain, but it’s only if they are raw, which I don’t enjoy eating, to be honest! So the loss isn’t huge on me. Now if I can’t eat apple pies, then I’d be sad!

    Wow, an apple allergy!

    Well if you want to clarify get it tested. But if it’s not a big deal, you can just avoid it. I don’t think you’ll ever develop an allergy for oranges or chocolate.. it can’t just come out of no where. haha.

    my friend is allergic to kiwis. she get really itchy

    • Well, I do know allergies changes throughout our life! Like my dad, he was never allergic to shellfish, but when he was in his 50s, he became allergic to it O_o. Since then I always hoped that I’d never develop an allergy to chocolate or something XD;

    I’m allergic to apples too, they make my legs itchy! I did once notice my ears were itchy too but mostly it’s my legs. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one.

  8. I know this was posted some time ago.. :0

    I’m also allergic to apples (as well as some other fruit). I get the itching in my inner ears and my throat when I eat them, as well as a bit of swelling if I don’t catch it in time.

    I’ve been able to rule out that it’s not pesticides that cause it, but it’s been suggested to me that it may be pectin in the fruit itself that causes the reaction. :/

    Here’s a good article on it: http://foodallergens.ifr.ac.uk/food.lasso?selected_food=2

    • Thanks for the link! And I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s allergic to them. And I figured it couldn’t be the pesticide but something in the apples XD;;
